Definition
A classic migraine headache is described as a throbbing headache that occurs on one side and is episodic (in episodes) following its onset in adolescence or early adult life. However, all migraine headaches do not follow this distinct pattern.
Etiology
Migraine headaches are often associated with a family history of the ailment. They may be triggered by emotional or physical stress, lack of sleep, missed meals, and specific foods, e.g., chocolate or alcoholic beverages. Menstruation or use of oral contraceptives have also have been linked with this disorder.
Signs & Symptoms
In addition to one-sided throbbing pain, symptoms that may also be experienced include: anorexia, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, and blurring of vision. These symptoms usually occur gradually, and may last several hours or longer. In relation to specific disturbances in neurological function, visual problems may include hallucinations of various figures and geometric patterns. Other problems may include: aphasia, numbness, tingling, clumsiness, or weakness.
Tests
Initially, diagnostic testing to determine the underlying cause is generally based on the symptoms presented by the patient and the physical examination. The need for computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and lumbar puncture are determined on an individual basis.
Treatment
Avoidance of factors that trigger the headaches, as well as prophylactic or symptomatic management with medications is the focus for treating migraines. At times, a simple analgesic at the onset of symptoms may be helpful, but additional medications are often needed. Several medications are used on a prophylactic basis for patients who experienced migraines more than two or three times a month. It may take trials with a number of drugs before symptoms are brought under control.
Residuals
Patients who receive prophylactic medications have the potential to suffer various side effects depending on the medication used. One common side effect of most of the medications is gastrointestinal disturbance.
