7714 - Sickle cell anemia

Old Rating Criterion 1

7714 Effective July 2, 1985 to October 23, 1995

7714 - Sickle cell anemia Rating
An evaluation of 100 percent is assigned whenever there is evidence of total incapacitation with repeated painful crises occurring in skin, joints, bones, or any major organs caused by hemolysis and sickling of red blood cells with anemia, thrombosis, and infarction. 100
An evaluation of 60 percent is granted if the record shows severe disease with painful hemolytic crises several times a year, or in symptom combinations which preclude more than light manual labor. A higher evaluation of 100 percent is not warranted unless the record shows total incapacitation with repeated painful crises occurring in skin, joints, bones, or any major organs caused by hemolysis and sickling of red blood cells with anemia, thrombosis, and infarction. 60
An evaluation of 30 percent is assigned if there is a showing of moderate impairment of health following repeated hemolytic sickling crises. A higher evaluation of 60 percent is not warranted unless the record shows severe disease with painful hemolytic crises several times a year, or in symptom combinations which preclude more than light manual labor. 30
An evaluation of 10 percent is assigned for mild, asymptomatic disease in remission, but with identifiable organ impairment. A higher evaluation of 30 percent is not warranted unless evidence demonstrates moderate impairment of health following repeated hemolytic sickling crises. 10

Old Rating Criterion 2

7714 Effective October 23, 1995 to December 9, 2018

7714 - Sickle cell anemia Rating
With repeated painful crises, occurring in skin, joints, bones or any major organs caused by hemolysis and sickling of red blood cells, with anemia, thrombosis and infarction, with symptoms precluding even light manual labor 100
With painful crises several times a year or with symptoms precluding other than light manual labor 60
Following repeated hemolytic sickling crises with continuing impairment of health 30
Asymptomatic, established case in remission, but with identifiable organ impairment 10
Note: Sickle cell trait alone, without a history of directly attributable pathological findings, is not a ratable disability. Cases of symptomatic sickle cell trait will be forwarded to the Director, Compensation Service, for consideration under 38 CFR 3.321(b)(1).
