The ovary is the gland in the female reproductive system that produces the ovum, or reproductive cell, and two hormones (estrogen and progesterone). There are two ovaries, one at either side of the pelvis.

Disease, injury or adhesions of the ovary may be caused by cysts, benign tumors, cancer, hormone abnormalities, eating disorders, decreased body fat, trauma to the central nervous system (CNS), chronic disease such as end-stage renal disease (ESRD), stress, and radiation exposure.

There may be abnormal menses, infertility, excess facial hair, abdominal bloating or swelling, pain during intercourse, low abdominal pain that may be dull or sharp, changes in bowel or bladder function, or abnormal hormone levels.

History and physical examination, laboratory tests, x-ray, computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fertility studies, pelvic ultrasonography, and laparotomy for cancer staging of disease may be done.

Therapy may depend on the underlying cause of the condition and patient need. Hormone therapy, weight management, and stress management may be indicated. Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these may be required.

Development of osteoporosis may occur. Long-term hormone therapy may be indicated. In the event of cancer, the outcome may depend on the stage and amount of residual disease, as well as the patient's genetic and biologic factors. The potential for tumors to recur exists. Counseling, psychotherapy, and support groups may be indicated to assist the patient in dealing with the diagnosis.

• Natural menopause, primary amenorrhea, and pregnancy and childbirth are not disabilities for rating purposes. Chronic residuals of medical or surgical complications of pregnancy may be disabilities for rating purposes.
