DBQ: Link to Index of DBQ/Exams by Disability for DC 7612

Definition

The term cervix refers to the neck or a part of an organ resembling a neck. In this case, it refers to the cervix or neck of the uterus. It is the lower part of the uterus from the internal os outward to the external os, and extends into the vagina.

Etiology

Polyps, warts, inflammatory or infectious diseases, cysts, dysplasia, or cancer may cause disease of or injury to the cervix. The cause of cancer is unknown, but it may be attributed to intercourse at an early age (prior to age 18), multiple partners, or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

Signs & Symptoms

Manifestations of the condition may include: infertility; abnormal bleeding; unusually heavy menstrual periods; anemia; abnormal vaginal discharge, which may be heavy, watery and bloody, clear, gray or yellow, and malodorous; pelvic pain; frequent, urgent or painful urination; genital burning or itching; dull backache; and generalized poor health. Lesions, masses, nodules, irregular surfaces, or polyps may be visible on examination.

Tests

A complete history and physical and pelvic examinations may be indicated. Laboratory studies; papanicolaou (PAP) smear; colposcopy; laparoscopy; conization; dilatation and curettage (D&C); staging; or biopsy may be performed to determine the cause and severity of the disease. X-ray or ultrasonography may aid in the diagnosis.

Treatment

Treatment may be related to the cause and symptoms of the disease. It may include surgery and oral or topical medications for specific organisms. For cancer, radiation, chemotherapy, surgery or a combination of these may be necessary.
