7521 - Penis, removal of glans

DBQ: Link to Index of DBQ/Exams by Disability for DC 7521

Definition

The glans is the rounded, bulbous end of the penis.

Etiology

Cause for the removal of the glans could be injury, disease, or infection. Uncircumcised males and diabetics are more prone to balanitis. Penile cancer could be the cause of surgical removal of the glans. Injuries can occur from gunshot wounds, and industrial or farm accidents.

Signs & Symptoms

The primary functions of the penis are copulation and urination, and the effects on these functions will vary according to the etiology.

Tests

The disorder is diagnosed by visual inspection.

Treatment

Circumcision may be indicated in the uncircumcised for chronic infections as well as for good personal hygiene. Antifungal and antibacterial creams are used to cure chronic infections. Penile cancer may require, at the least, laser treatment, or it may require partial or total removal of the penis (penectomy).

Residuals

If the penis needs to be reconstructed due to injury, it may be associated with long-term incontinence of urine. Early detection and treatment in cancer leads to better chances for cures.

Special Considerations

  • The new criteria for the Genitourinary Disease and Conditions body system became effective November 14, 2021.  Review both current and historic criteria prior to any reduction for disabilities established before that date.  38 CFR 3.951(a)

Notes

  • When evaluating any claim involving loss or loss of use of one or more creative organs, refer to 38 CFR 3.350 of this chapter to determine whether the Veteran may be entitled to special monthly compensation. Footnotes in the schedule indicate conditions which potentially establish entitlement to special monthly compensation; however, there are other conditions in this section which under certain circumstances also establish entitlement to special monthly compensation.
