7518 - Urethra, stricture of
DBQ: Link to Index of DBQ/Exams by Disability for DC 7518
Definition
A narrowing or closure of the urethra.
Etiology
The condition is related to the following factors: trauma, tumor, stones, fibrosis, or infection. There could also be a congenital cause.
Signs & Symptoms
Urinary stasis with infection is common in the condition. Decreased urinary stream, bladder distention, and hydronephrosis (a collection of urine in the renal pelvis due to obstruction) may occur. Obstruction at this level causes bilateral kidney involvement (see Diagnostic Code: 7509 Hydronephrosis for further Signs & Symptoms). In addition, pus in the urine, painful urination, and possible anuria could also be present. Gross blood in the urine or blood at the meatus indicates trauma.
Tests
Urinalysis, physical examination, and endoscopic examination of the urethra are done. (See Diagnostic Code: 7509 Hydronephrosis for Tests)
Treatment
Opening of the stricture with an endoscope is used to treat the condition. (See Diagnostic Code: 7509 Hydronephrosis for Treatment)
Residuals
Trauma strictures may heal spontaneously or develop into permanent strictures. Obstructive strictures can cause hydronephrosis.
Special Considerations
-
None.
Notes
-
When evaluating any claim involving loss or loss of use of one or more creative organs, refer to 38 CFR 3.350 of this chapter to determine whether the Veteran may be entitled to special monthly compensation. Footnotes in the schedule indicate conditions which potentially establish entitlement to special monthly compensation; however, there are other conditions in this section which under certain circumstances also establish entitlement to special monthly compensation.
