Definition
The eyebrows are the arch over the eye, usually consisting of hairs. Loss of an eyebrow (unilateral) or eyebrows (bilateral) is categorized with the disorders alopecia universalis or alopecia capitis totalis.
Etiology
Alopecia may be a result of the following causes: radiation; severe illness; a form of dermatitis; drugs, especially cytotoxic agents; an endocrine disorder; stress; autoimmune reactions; hereditary factors; or normal aging.
Signs & Symptoms
The general signs and symptoms of alopecia include: loss of hair over the body, with or without loss of scalp, eyebrow, and eyelash hair. The loss is painless, and it may be sudden or gradual.
Tests
A complete medical history and physical examination are usually carried out to discover any underlying disease or disorder.
Treatment
Treatment will depend on the underlying condition. Various techniques to stimulate return of the hair may be attempted.
Residuals
Usually, the hair will grow back in 90% of cases within 6 to 24 months.
