6021 - Entropion
DBQ: Link to Index of DBQ/Exams by Disability for DC 6021
Definition
Entropion is a turning inward of the eyelid, usually the lower lid. There are four types: involutional, cicatricial, congenital or spastic.
Etiology
Involutional entropion occurs as a result of aging. Cicatricial entropion results from conjunctival and tarsal scar formation (see diagnostic code: 6017 conjunctivitis, trachomatous, chronic). Congenital entropion is caused by the lid margin being rotated toward the cornea.
Signs & Symptoms
Scraping of the cornea by eyelashes (trichiasis) may cause corneal irritation and possible ulceration (see diagnostic code: 6001 keratopathy). Chronic inflammatory scars from trachoma may be apparent. Symptoms may include tearing and eye redness.
Tests
The following tests may be used: fluorescein staining; slit lamp; visual fields; visual acuity; and ophthalmoscopy.
Treatment
The usual treatment is surgery to evert the lid.
Residuals
Surgery usually results in an effective repair, and impingement of the eyelashes on the cornea is corrected.
